Writer in Residence

Bawtry Phoenix Theatre's 'Writer in Residence' is local Doncaster playwright Steve Kellett. Steve, a lecturer at Nottingham Trent University, grew up in Doncaster and in his youth dabbled in stand up comedy - being heavily influenced by the popular variety performers of the 60s and 70s. After a period away from theatre to raise a family and earn some money, he joined Bawtry Phoenix Theatre in 1993.

Comedy is still Steve's forte and he put his previous comedy experience to good use in his first play 'We're Gonna Win the Cup' performed by our group, to glowing reviews, in March 2002 and following that success, it was taken to Doncaster's Civic Theatre in September 2004. After the Associate Director of the Hull Truck Theatre Company came to see the production, Steve was invited to join a writers group in Hull.

As well as working on his new play 'Kilimanjaro', Steve has been leading a new writing project involving several members of Bawtry Phoenix Theatre who have written  a one act play for Everton's Drama Festival in October. The play, entitled 'Caught On The Boundary' is a light murder mystery.
